Until the Sun and Moon go down by Angela Ferrotti approaches Alicudi as a reality to be explored through a sequence of stages, each capable of directing the gaze towards a different perceptual threshold. Tenebrae opens up a zone of opacity in which the island emerges as an active presence, never entirely accessible to the eye and permeated by forces that exceed the immediate evidence of the visible. Richiami focuses on what first comes into view and on the subtle relationships that transform the island’s space into a
field of listening. In Albedo, matter presents itself to the light and retains its variations, revealing porosity, texture and sedimentation, so that the landscape becomes a sensitive body and rarefaction manifests itself as a language. Durezza emphasises the tangible resistance imposed by the territory and the austere constraints it places upon bodies, gestures, nature and inhabited architecture. Spells,moving away from the purely physical dimension, opens onto a further threshold: that of an ambiguous enchantment and the enduring presence of a force that cannot be fully explained, yet permeates the place and subtly alters one’s perception of it. Vargtimmen then leads the narrative towards a more liminal temporality, through a perspective that might be understood as external, in which the landscape is interiorised and solitude becomes almost absolute. Sintesi,finally, holds all these elements together in their tension, presenting Alicudi as a place that cannot be reduced to a sequence of images claiming to fully describe its reality or value.
